about the artist

Lorena Siminovich (born in Buenos Aires) is a San Francisco based artist, designer and illustrator. With a background in graphic design, and an extensive career as an art director, she became interested in design for children in 2001 when she moved from Buenos Aires to New York. During this time, she was responsible for art direction and product development at Mudpuppy, an award winning company that manufactures puzzles and toys for kids, whose products can be found in museum stores across the country. Soon thereafter, she began her illustration career and relocated to San Francisco. Lorena has written and illustrated several children’s books and has more projects in the works.

Her latest endeavor, Petit Collage, started in October 2006 with the idea of offering affordable art for children (and grownups!), with a modern feel.

about the collages

The collages are made with found, recycled, painted and vintage papers. Lorena travels (in space and time!) and collects papers from all over the world, and from different eras. For example, in her collages you may find japanese architectural drawings from the fifties next to a school map from Costa Rica.

She chooses maple plywood as a support for her work, to incorporate a natural element and the beauty of wood grain to interact with the re-used papers. Lorena's collages seem deceivingly simple, but upon closer look, the juxtaposition of patterns, textures and languages explore different cultures and brings a tactile reference back to an overly digital world.

Lorena draws her inspiration for her collages from midcentury design and vintage illustration while her color sense comes from her latin american roots. Her designs are numbered limited edition variée of fifty, which make every piece a one of a kind when it comes to paper, patterns and color selections. This method allows her to keep the art affordable, offering modern unique pieces, that can also be personalized.
