“Every child is an artist ...

“Every child is an artist ...

the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.” Pablo Picasso

Petit Collage was born from a love of art. Our first product, back in 2006, was a hand-crafted little owl collage made from recycled materials. That product inspired not only our company name but our sustainability ethos.

The idea that every child is an artist is one we wholeheartedly believe in. Some children show signs of natural talent, and others need the talent to be teased out of them … but it is there! Expression through art is extremely good for mental and emotional health, where the joy is in the process even more than the end result.

So, how is art good for kids?

Art is incredibly beneficial for kids in many ways—emotionally, intellectually, socially, and even physically. Here's how:

1. Supports Emotional Development

  • Self-expression: Art gives children a way to express feelings they may not have words for.
  • Stress relief: It can be calming and therapeutic, helping kids manage anxiety or frustration.
  • Confidence building: Completing an art project can boost self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.

2. Boosts Cognitive and Academic Skills

  • Critical thinking: Creating art encourages decision-making and problem-solving (e.g., choosing colors, shapes, composition).
  • Focus and attention: Art projects often require sustained attention and planning.
  • Improved academic performance: Studies suggest that children involved in the arts often perform better in math, reading, and writing.

3. Enhances Motor Skills

  • Fine motor development: Cutting, drawing, painting, and sculpting help strengthen hand-eye coordination and dexterity, especially in younger children.

4. Encourages Creativity and Imagination

  • Innovation skills: Art nurtures original thinking, which is crucial in a fast-changing world.
  • Open-ended learning: Unlike many school subjects, art has no single "right answer," encouraging experimentation.

5. Fosters Social Skills

  • Collaboration: Group art projects teach teamwork and communication.
  • Cultural awareness: Through exploring different artistic traditions, children learn about other cultures and perspectives.

6. Provides Joy and Fun

  • Art is inherently enjoyable. That positive experience alone is a key ingredient in a child's healthy development.
