Wooden Formats for Babies and Early Toddlers

This collection focuses on the wooden toys suited for the youngest users - roughly 6 months through 24 months. Each format serves a different stage of physical development:

  • Wooden rattles (6 months+): Light enough to grip, smooth enough to mouth, and satisfying to shake. Your baby gets sound, texture, and weight feedback all at once.
  • Push-along toys (12 months+): Animals or vehicles on wheels with a stick handle. Your child pushes forward while walking - it supports balance and builds confidence during those early steps.
  • Pull toys (18 months+): Animals on a string that follow your child as they walk. Requires more coordination than push toys because your child needs to walk forward while looking back or to the side.
  • Stackers (12 months+): Rings or blocks on a central post. Threading rings onto the post develops hand-eye coordination, and knocking them off is half the fun.

For the full wooden range including puzzles, games, instruments, and toys for older children, our Wooden Toys & Games collection covers everything.

Wooden Toys and Soft Toys Together

At this age, most babies benefit from having both wooden and soft toys available. Wooden toys offer weight, solidity, and the satisfying sound of wood on wood (or wood on floor). Soft toys offer comfort, lightness, and textures your baby can squeeze and mouth without supervision concerns.

A good starting set might be one or two wooden items (a rattle and a stacker) alongside soft toys from our Soft Baby Toys collection. That gives your baby variety without overloading the toy box.

Materials and Safety

Every item uses FSC-certified wood with water-based, non-toxic paints and water-based varnish. All products meet CPSIA, ASTM, and CE safety standards, including testing for oral contact. The wood is sanded smooth with no rough edges or splinter risk.

Wooden instruments (xylophones, tambourines, shakers) overlap with this age range and live in our Musical Instruments collection. For budget-friendly options across all baby formats, our Pocket-Friendly Fun collection includes wooden toys alongside other affordable picks.

Wooden Toys as Gifts

A wooden rattle or push-along toy makes a beautiful first birthday gift - the FSC wood and water-based paint give it a look and feel that stands apart from plastic toys. Pull toys and stackers are another strong option for the 12-18 month range. Wooden puzzles from our Puzzles collection are a natural next step once the child reaches age 2.
