What Changes Between 1 and 3

The jump from 12 months to 36 months is one of the biggest developmental leaps in childhood. A 1-year-old is just learning to walk and stack two blocks. A 3-year-old is doing beginner puzzles, playing matching games, and asking "why" about everything.

Here's what tends to work at each sub-stage:

  • 12-18 months: Push-along toys, simple stackers, wooden rattles, and shape sorters. Your child is building gross motor skills and starting to use both hands together. Our Wooden Baby Toys collection has the widest selection for this stage.
  • 18-24 months: Pull toys, building blocks, and first instruments. Coordination improves quickly here - your child can start doing things that require aim and sequence, like stacking blocks in order or hitting a xylophone key.
  • 2-3 years: Beginner puzzles (3-6 pieces), matching games, and early board books with more complex images. This is when problem-solving kicks in. Our Toddler Puzzles collection covers this stage specifically.

Puzzles and Games: When to Start

Most children are ready for their first tray puzzle around age 2. Beginner sets with 3, 4, 5, and 6-piece puzzles in one box are the best way in - your child progresses through the set at their own pace, and the tray format ensures every piece has one correct spot.

By age 3, many children are ready for 24-piece floor puzzles and simple matching games (flip two cards, find the pair). These are a natural bridge toward the structured games they'll start playing at age 4+.

Instruments for Toddlers

Xylophones, tambourines, and shakers are all popular at this age because they give immediate feedback - hit it and it makes a sound. No instructions, no setup, no right or wrong way to play. The full range lives in our Musical Instruments collection.

Imaginative Play Starts Here

Around age 2-3, children start using toys to tell stories - the wooden animal becomes a character, the blocks become a house. Press-out cardboard play sets and magnetic play scenes feed this instinct by providing settings and characters your child can arrange and rearrange. Our Play Sets collection has the full range of these formats.
